11 Ways to Time Manage Your College Schedule Before It Starts

Whether this is your first semester in college, or you transferred to a different college, there are a few things you can do to be ready before it starts. Starting on the right foot makes the rest of the school year go more smoothly.

1. Practice keeping a schedule. One of the main reasons students drop out, or fail, is lack of organization. Just learning to discipline your time while with friends will carry over when you need to go back to your dorm to study. What was meant as a dinner get together could easily end up a four hour conversation.

2. Go to Orientation. You won’t want to find all your classes the day your semester starts. This may give you a chance to find a “like-minded” roommate if you don’t have one yet.

3. Visit the website of the college you plan to attend. You may be able to find your class requirements ahead of time. One major benefit is putting your order in for your textbook rental before you even leave for college. You could have them shipped free, and find the best deal available through Department of Textbook Rentals.

4. Keep your mind sharp. Read a best seller. Find a book in your major, or one that covers a subject you are weak in.

5. Take a summer course. It could be beneficial to take a course or two in a junior, or community college. Just be sure the credits will transfer.

6. Check to see if you have assigned summer reading. If you signed up for a class like this, be sure to get this done in the allotted time.

7. Get your electronics in order. There will be many opportunities to use a tablet, netbook, or laptop. Be confident in the devices you have, and know how to use them. It would be a great disappointment to find your devices wouldn’t allow you to sync when you need to.

8. Meet with the financial officer at your college. Make sure you have a plan of action for paying your tuition. Know how much your late fees will be, and avoid them if possible. If you plan to pay by credit card, be sure they accept that option and the credit card you will be using. Or set up direct deposit.

9. Try finding a roommate who will share expenses. If you and your roommate have something in common, see if you can go in together. If one of you have a car, you can split the gas money, or consolidate errands.

10. Schedule your outside readings. One of the best ways to stay focused is to have a plan, and don’t detour from it. Add up all the reading you need to do and divide it by when it needs to be done. If you have 20 pages of History to read a day, be sure to read it. Use audio books, or even download books so you can read every chance you get.

11. Don’t let friends demand your time. The beginning of the semester when you are making friends, and getting used to a new schedule, make sure you keep your studies in mind while mingling with friends. Schedule your time with friends like you would set up an appointment. If your friends don’t respect the schedule you need to keep, you may need to limit the time you spend with them. Find like minded classmates who take their studies seriously, and spend your free time with them. They will understand if you only have a half of hour to spend with them.
